Seventh Generation Consoles

2004

            This generation opened early for handheld consoles, with Nintendo releasing its Nintendo DS, and Sony the PlayStation Portable within close proximity of each other. The PSP had superior graphics and power, whilst the DS may have had a lower-power design, but it feature a novel control interface; the touch screen. The DS became popular with young children and middle aged gamers, whilst the PSP took the generation in between who needed the internet, music, videos and photos one could store on the PSP.

 

2005

            Microsoft steps forward with the Xbox 360 , with Sony following as 2005 ends with the PlayStation 3. It sets the technology with high-definition graphics, large disk-based secondary storage, integrated networking, and a companion on-line game play.

 

2006

            The handheld Nintendo DS Lite is created by Nintendo. Better than the old DS is becomes extremely popular, but Sony is close behind with the PSP Go. A few days after the PlayStation 3 is released, Nintendo releases the Nintendo Wii, the “revolution console”. The Wii cost much less than the Xbox, and was much more interesting being so much more different to the usual games console. It has a motion-based control with infrared-based pointing. Many dismissed the Wii as something that would not work, but many others soon caught onto the “Wii fever”. It became the fasts selling games console in the world.

 

2007

            Apple releases the iPod Touch after the iPhone was of so much success.

 

2009

            Sony finally releases the PSP Go, a newer, slimmer version of the old PSP, with the control pad slide from the base, therefore with the screen covering most of the front size.
