Third Generation Consoles

1985

The North American video game console market is revived by Nintendo’s 8-bit console, Famicom, also known as the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). It became a massive success due to containing Super Mario Bros, one of the most popular games still. The NES dominated the market until the rise of the next generation consoles.

In the new consoles, the gamepad took over the joystick, paddle, and keypads. The gamepad had an 8 direction Directional-pad (D-pad), with 2 or more buttons becoming the standard.

1986

Though the NES was popular in Asia and the USA, in Europe, Australia and South America, the Sega Master System was more common.
